Several candidates pledged their affection for guns and the Second Amendment at a meet-and-greet event at the Gainesville Target Range, sharing their personal experiences with firearms with audience members above the popping of rifle shots nearby. Incumbent state Rep. Larry Cretul, a Republican who's running to keep his District 22 seat, told audience members he has a concealed weapon permit.

In Wednesday’s Star-Banner Editorial “State Should Take Care of its Own” the editors rightly praised last week’s Circuit Court ruling overturning a new law that requires counties to pay for the state’s juvenile detention centers. I agree—it does “pass the buck” on juvenile detention centers to Florida’s 67 counties. It is an unfunded mandate.

A judge in Tallahassee struck down as unconstitutional a state law passed earlier this year that mandated local governments to pay for the pre-trial housing and feeding of juvenile inmates held at Florida Department of Juvenile Justice's 25 facilities, including one in Ocala.
